England’s story of 1992 Cricket World Cup

The 2011 World Cup hosted by India, was eventually won by India. The 2015 World Cup was also on similar lines with the hosting country (Australia) winning the whole thing. England is hosting 2019 Cricket WC, So what do we infer from that?

Are the Englishmen on the verge of winning their first ever ODI World Cup title? Despite the game of cricket having its roots in the country, England has never tasted victory in the showpiece event.

England have been in the final three times, dating back to their first in 1979, then 1987 and then in the 1992 World Cup. They also played in the final of the 2016 ICC World T20, only to be defeated by West Indies in the final over by the heroics of Carlos Brathwaite.

The only ICC tournament that England have won is the 2010 World T20 held in West Indies.

Literally, everyone were surprised after England revealed their kit for CWC 2019. They will be coming down with an almost replica of CWC 1992 kit. The question arises here! they are doing this to play final again?

England has tasted the final 3 times but never won the trophy. The last times they ended up in the final was in the year 1992 where Pakistan led by Imran Khan slammed them in final. English side led by Graham Gooch was wearing the same kit at that time.

How was the overall figure?

The tournament was played in round-robin format where every team faces each other. England had an appreciable start as they triumph India in the very 2nd match of the tournament. Defeating West Indies in second match the visitors turned more self-assured. Bowling Pakistan for just 70 in 3rd match English didn’t miss a chance to prove their bowling strength. Though that match was washed out due to rain. Mighty Aussies were beaten snugly by 8 wickets in the 4th match.

With restricting Srilanka on 174 after making 280 in the 1st Innings. England registered the only 100+ run victory in 1992 WC. The winning momentum continued as the mighty English side outplayed South Africa in the sixth match. New Zeland put a full stop on England’s winning way as the home side were victorious by 7 wickets. There is a trend of England performing poor against the small teams and 1992 CWC witnessed that too as the fragile Zimbabwe side knocked down the English and registered their only win.

With 11 points (5 wins 2 loss and 1 no result) England finished 2nd on the table just after the hosts Kiwis (14 points). South Africa and Pakistan too got the ticket for next round.

Pakistan booked a place in final disappointing the hosts in the semifinal while England fixed to play against Pakistan in final defeating South Africa by 20 runs.

Pakistan posted 249 on board in the final but the English side was restricted within 227 as the Asian side conquered the cricketing world.
